Microwave meal for one?
If you’re spending this Valentine’s Day alone, you don’t have to be lonely. Aim for compassionate self-love rather than sadness or self-judgment, and it can be an opportunity to nurture yourself, reflect, and embrace your own worth.
Embracing Self-Compassion
Treat yourself with kindness, just as you would a friend. Instead of focusing on what’s missing, reflect on what you have and small achievable steps that you would like to take in the direction of your dream life. Have a listen to Season 4 Episode 1 of the Mature Allure podcast for inspiration on goal setting.
Your worth isn’t determined by your relationship status. Far more important is the love and care that you give to yourself and that you put out into the world every day.
Ways to Practice Self-Love on Valentine’s Day
- Indulge in Self-Care. Take a long bath, cook a delicious meal, or treat yourself to something special. Valentine’s Day is a perfect occasion to pamper yourself.
- Reconnect with Passions. Use this day to do something you love, whether it’s reading, painting, writing, or listening to your favorite music.
- Write Yourself a Love Letter. Reflect on your journey, your strengths, and the things you appreciate about yourself. This simple act can be a powerful reminder of your own value.
- Spend Time with Loved Ones. Even if you’re single, you’re not alone. Call a friend, visit family, or set up a virtual hangout to share warmth and connection.
- Practice Gratitude. Write down three things you’re grateful for. Focusing on gratitude can shift your mindset and bring a sense of fulfillment.
- Engage in Mindfulness and Relaxation. Meditation, deep breathing, or a nature walk can help ground you in the present moment and bring a sense of peace.
Changing the Narrative
Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be about romantic love. In Finland, Valentine’s Day is actually called Friendship Day. There are many other types of love. One of my favorites has to be “agape” - an unconditional, universal, altruistic love for others. Why not spread a little love on Valentine’s Day with some random acts of kindness?
Turn a Negative into a Positive
Feeling bitter about an ex? If journaling isn’t exorcising those old relationship demons quite the way you’d hoped, maybe this will do the trick. For $25 Adams County SPCA will name a stray cat after your ex and neuter it for you - genius!
This Valentine’s Day, choose to be kind to yourself, cherish your own company, and celebrate the most important love of all—the love you have for yourself. How will you spend your Valentine’s Day? Let us know in the comments below.
